Handmade Ceramic Hanging Flowerpots and Planters
Colorful art for your plants! The Pros and Cons of Ceramic Hanging Planters
First the Pros of ceramic Hanging Planters:
Handmade ceramic hanging planters are vital for the avid and novice gardener to grow beautiful plants. Plant pots that hang provide visual interest for the front porch as colorful flowers overflow in abundance from the pot. Why should you choose an unglazed clay hanging planter rather than a ubiquitous plastic pot? Oh, let me count the ways!!! First, plastic containers do not allow roots to breathe. The leaves of a plant take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, while the roots of a plant take in oxygen which is also vital to the healthy growth of that plant. Second, the unglazed terracotta clay also absorbs excess water making it almost impossible to overwater and drown your plants. Third, natural clay will wick excess fertilizer salts away from the plant’s roots. Having the correct balance of the nutrients is vital for a healthy plant. The white coating on the ceramic is excess fertilizers seeping through the walls of the pot; This is a good thing! Over-fertilizing will kill a plant! This excess fertilizer has nowhere to go in a plastic pot. If you think the white coating is unpleasant, you can clean it with a brush and some weak vinegar water solution.
Now the Cons:
As with everything in life, there are also some disadvantages in using terracotta flower pots. Unsealed clay dries out quicker than plastic pots so you will need to water more frequently. They are also heavier than other choices, and you will need to consider this when choosing your location and mounting hardware.
Finally, the Vivid Compromise:
My colorful terracotta ceramic planters are partially sealed with glaze on the upper portion of the container. This vibrant glaze adds beauty to your plant display while cutting down on the evaporation of water helping you not need to water as frequently as completely natural clay.
